The Shapes for Cash Newsletter
16th February 2025
Now then: I have finally got off my arse† and am sending out the first Shapes for Cash Newsletter (something that I think we can all agree is a very special thing indeed). The reason for this sudden lapse into communicative mode is to announce the release of two lovely new typefaces, that will be the foundation for some others to come shortly ¶ These typefaces are called Squodge and Bone, and they form the core of an unorthodox family of designs named EnjoyFun (occasionally these words will be suffixed with ® and ™ symbols for, well, fun) ¶ Things started with a few sketches of what became the heavier of the two (Squodge), here are a couple of them:
this one makes tantalising reference to something to occur at 4:30
on Tuesday and seems to indicate that Edvard Munch was much
on my mind at the time. Apart from a vestige of a chore list,
there are some indications that I wanted to expand the design to
have things going on within and without the lettershapes, how exciting!
some of the shapes have been digitised here (and have changed
very little in the finished typeface). The perceptive reader will note
that the typeface has acquired the groundbreaking name “New Font”
at this stage (summer 2023). It is also possible to see further
evidence of the various ornamental musings that are planned ¶ Now
that you have seen the sketches, I expect you might like to see the
final things. I happen to have prepared a couple of images for just
that purpose. Here are some variations and combinations:
and here is an example of overlayment:
Well, that's kind of it for now, thanks for reading this far (and for
subscribing in the first place). Please go on the site and have a good
looksee at the typefaces, and naturally tell all your friends, even
if they don’t want to listen ¶ Oh, and I’m going to make some wee
viddys to promote and show off, but I’m only putting those on the
Shapes for Cash Instagram from now on, so if you don’t follow that yet,
now might be the time.
